This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

First TPE Nova 1

On 20 April 2018 Hitachi confirmed that the first of the 19 five-car type AT300 EDMUs ordered by Angel Trains for TransPennine Express services had departed from the Kasado factory in Japan, the voyage to England expected to take around two months. The first part of the voyage involved a short journey by barge on the sheltered Seto Naikai, the Seto Inland Sea, which lies between Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū, to join an ocean-going vessel. TPE has now branded these new trains Nova 1. These photos show the first train being loaded onto the barge on 10 April.

On the night of 22/ 23 April 2018 DP Ostrava’s first Tango NF2 tram, 1701, arrived at the operator’s Martinov works, having travelled from Siedlce on board a low-loader. The first two photos in this sequence were taken on the morning of the 23rd while it was being prepared for unloading. The third view shows 1701 together with ČD Cargo’s 731.049, which had arrived at the Martinov works with four wagons loaded with rails for track relaying on the Ostrava tramway network. During the night of 23/24 April nOVA is to be moved to Poruba tram depot, in readiness for tests, scheduled to start on the 24th.

On 13 April 2018 RegioJet’s first two yellow TRAXXes, 386.201 and 202, were moved from Germany via Děčín to Kolín, incorporated in a METRANS freight. They were then moved to the VUZ Velim test centre for a series of test runs on the circuits, the same day also making a test run between Kolín and Velim, as shown in the photo, taken at Velim station on 16 April.

At 08.36 on 23 March 2018 FlixTrain’s inaugural service, hauled by Taurus ES64U2-005, departed from Hamburg-Altona bound for Köln Hbf. This service runs on only certain days of the week, with one train pair on each of these days.

On 22 March 2018 at Stadler Siedlce works was presented a two-car Tango NF2 tram, the first of 30, with an option (now confirmed) for ten more, being built for DPO. The name nOVA was chosen by Ostrava residents. These photos show the exterior of the practically finished tram, which is to be moved to Ostrava in mid-April.

The third photo shows the interior, also nearing completion. The seats fitted were of the type requested by DPO, being similar to those found in the operator’s other vehicles. The final photo also shows one of the bodyshells for the second nOVA at the final assembly stage. Also visible in this view is GYSEV’s future FLIRT 3 EMU, 435 509, being assembled.

On 10 March 2018 Alstom announced the completion of its first two-section Class WAG12 electric locomotive, 60001, at its new works in Madhepura (in Bihar State). These photos show 60001 at the final assembly stage, being moved out of the final assembly hall, and then making a trial run on the factory’s test track. In 2015 Indian Railways placed a 3.5 billion EUR order with Alstom for 800 two-section locomotives, of which 60001 is the first.

Bombardier’s Kassel works is now completing the first two TRAXX electric locomotives for RegioJet. The latter now anticipates their arrival in the Czech Republic early in April. They will then be subjected to commissioning and acceptance tests, and should be ready for putting into commercial service either towards the end of April or early in May. The first photo shows 386.201 on 2 March, and the second shows 386.202 on 1 March 2018, both at Kassel.

On 1 March 2018 Vivarail announced that it had entered into an agreement with West Midland Trains to build three Class 230 DMUs for use on the Marston Vale line between Bedford and Bletchley. The trains, rebuilt from former London Underground EMU stock, are to enter service later in 2018, thus being the first new trains to enter service during the WMT franchise.

First TRAXX DC3 and MS3 Born

The family of new generation TRAXXes is expanding. There are now new MS and DC versions too. The first TRAXX DC3 was built at Bombardier’s Vado Ligure factory, and was presented on 14 December 2017 (see the first photo). It will probably be designated Class E494. Meanwhile final assembly at Kassel is taking place of one of the pre-series TRAXX MS3 locomotives, in the second photo, it is seen on 13 December, while now it is ready for first activating tests.

The first orders are now coming in for these new-generation TRAXXes. These are from the Italian State-owned railfreight operator. Mercitalia Rail has ordered 40 TRAXX DC3s with an option for 20 more. TX Logistik, German subsidiary of the Mercitalia Logistics, ordered 40 TRAXX MS3s, with an option for 25 more. 

First RegioJet Train Visits Wien

On 30 November 2017, a RegioJet train, hauled by Vectron 193 205, entered Wien Hbf. This was part of the preparations prior to the start of regular Praha - Wien services on 10 December. RegioJet owner, Radim Jančura, says that when the service starts the trains will be formed of rakes of five or six yellow-liveried carriages. During 2018 it is expected the trains will have up to nine cars.
