Hors d'oeuvres - the latest, most interesting news

This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

Although LEO Express had hoped to start this ‘taster’ service between Praha and Ostrava on 7 November 2012, it was delayed until the complete documentation had been given to the DU, the Czech rail authority. At 04.56 on 13 November the very first public LEO Express FLIRT EMU - 480.002 - pulled out of Praha hl. n., forming train IC 1351, bound for Ostrava. This introductory service will only run until 16 November, and between then and the start of the 2013 timetable, on 9 December, final stages of authorisation testing are to take place.

At the end of the last week LEO Express’s Class 480 FLIRT EMUs started making test runs on the SŽDC network. This was a fine opportunity for some publicity: 480.002 arrived at Praha hl. n. at 10.00, and a celebratory "birth" of the new Czech open access passenger operator was realised - with the attendance of qualified medical staff, too (see photos). In the afternoon 480.002 headed east, again under its own power, following the main line through Pardubice, Olomouc and Ostrava, to its future home base at Bohumín, reached at around 21.00. It subsequently returned west to Praha on another test run over what, from December this year, will be its regular service route.

Following its presentation at InnoTrans 2012, 480.003 travelled directly to Bohumín from Berlin, and not to the test circuits at Velim, where its sisters 480.001 and 002 are at present. The photos show the third LEO FLIRT at Bohumín depot on 29 September 2012.

Over the weekend heralding in InnoTrans week the outdoor exhibition area at Messe Berlin was steadily filling up with exhibits. The accompanying series of photos shows first a ČD RegioPanter EMU, a LEO Express FLIRT EMU and a modernised SBB LION trainset on 14 September. Also on display is a DB Class 430 EMU, seen here having its windscreen cleaned. Visible is also the TRAXX DE ME (Multi-Engine) locomotive, 245 003 (together with the TRAXX Last Mile 187 002).
Arriving on 15 September also were the GAMA locomotive, a trio of Vectrons (led by 192 961 Last Mile), and a Regentalbahn LINK DMU. On 16 September it was announced that at 09.15 on the 19th at InnoTrans DB and PESA would sign two framework contracts for middle-distance DMUs.

In the days approaching the opening of the world’s largest rail-related trade fair, a variety of new trains, some of which have never before been seen in public, converge on the German capital from all directions. Here we offer you a foretaste of what will be on show, including PESA’s German "cousin" of the Czech LINK DMU, and the same manufacturer’s new Gama electric locomotive. These photos were taken on 13 September 2012 at Nudow (southwest of Berlin), and at Wustermark station (west of Berlin).
