This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

ČD Vectrons In Berlin And Hamburg

Starting on 8 May 2018, ČD’s Class 193s have been venturing much deeper into Germany than in the recent past, when since December 2017 they only reached as far as Dresden or Leipzig hauling EC expresses from Praha. Now, they have daily diagrams, one to Berlin, the other to Berlin and Hamburg. This photo was taken on 8 May showing 193 290 heading EC 175 "Robert Schumann" to Praha hl. n. upon departure from the low level in Berlin Hbf. Starting on 10 June 2018 it is envisaged that the Class 193s will be used on all EC diagrams between Praha, Berlin and Hamburg, as originally intended.

Alstom’s Savigliano works has now completed repairing Class 680 Pendolino cars 682.003 and 082.003, which were heavily damaged during the level crossing accident in July 2015 in Studénka. The damage was such that repairs had to be realised at their birthplace. They started their journey back to the Czech Republic on 28 March, and this photo shows them that day between Savigliano and Torino.

The whole Class 680 Czech Pendolino EMU fleet is being subjected to complete interior refurbishment. The first to be returned to service following this was 680.005 on train SC 241 “Pendolino Košičan” from Praha to Košice on 25 September 2017. This one is now used on this and the return eastbound service SC 240.

The refurbishment involved the replacement of most interior fittings - seats, wall panelling, carpeting, power sockets, lighting, luggage racks, visual information system. WC cubicles and the bistro area were rejuvenated too. A children’s cinema has also been created. These photos show the refurbished first and second class saloons, and also the bistro area.

On the evening of 15 August 2017 a special train departed from Praha-Smíchov bound for Orșova in Romania, a run of 1,085 km. Not only was this a run of exceptional length, crossing four countries, but the train, formed of 18 carriages, was also exceptionally long. It was provided for around 1,100 passengers visiting the Banát music festival, and stops were provided to pick up passengers at Brno and Bratislava.

RegioJet, the organiser of the train, used not only its own carriages, but also incorporated some from KDS, ČD and ČD Cargo. The Banát festival is a major cultural event, focused on creating a wider awareness of the communities of Czech origins who live in this part of the Balkans. These photos show the train, hauled by RegioJet’s Vectron 193 226, crossing the bridge over the Vltava river near Praha-Smíchov.

On 19 July 2017 a consignment of 41 40-foot containers departed from the METRANS terminal at Praha-Uhříněves bound for Yiwu in Zhejiang province. This was a promotional, one-off pilot service, organised in association with a Chinese investment forum held in Praha the previous day. The payloads consisted of a mixture of Czech export products, including porcelain, crystal glass, cosmetic and automotive components. The train is routed via Poland, Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan, and is expected to take 16 days.

A westbound service from Yiwu to the Czech Republic is expected to run soon, and should there be sufficient demand a regular service might be established. Although this is not the first service to be operated from the Czech Republic to China, it is the first one to be provided following an initiative from China.

The first photo, taken at the METRANS terminal, shows METRANS’s 761.002 about to depart with the train. Eurorunner hauled it only to the Praha-Uhříněves station. METRANS was the organiser of the service as far as the border between Poland and Belarus, while haulage was provided by ČD Cargo and PKP Cargo. InterRail Holding is the main operator of the train. The other photo was taken near Česká Třebová, showing ČD Cargo’s 130.036 at the head of the train.

In anticipation of possible receipt of substantial EU co-finance via Cohesion Fund, on 13 April 2016 ČD invited three tenders for framework contracts for passenger stock. The size and nature of the potential orders will depend on what services ČD is awarded under contracts and the amount of subsidisation these will be entitled to. One tender involves up to 50 carriages (open saloons) for use on international expresses, designed for top service speeds of at least 230 km/h. Up to 30 DMUs are envisaged for long distance domestic services, one version with 120 seats, the other with 180 seats. Up to 20 EMUs are planned for long distance domestic services, one version with 200 seats, the other with 320 seats. These illustrations come from ČD's design manual for interiors of trains used on middle-distance and local services, so that are representative of what the new stock could look like. The red upholstery is used in first class, the blue in second.

On 9 June 2015 the first of ten five-car InterPanter EMUs destined for ČD’s middle and long distance services was moved from the Škoda Vagonka factory to the VUZ's test centre at Velim. This photo sequence shows 661.101 being moved by Vítkovice Doprava's 729.506 from the factory, situated in Ostrava-Vítkovice, via the Vítkovické železárny steelworks (second photo) to Ostrava-střed station on the SŽDC network (third photo). It then continued its journey to Velim.

In 2014 České dráhy ordered ten five-car and four three-car RegioPanter EMUs fitted with passenger accommodation designed for middle and long distance journeys. At a presentation event in Škoda Vagonka's Ostrava works on 29 April 2015 ČD and Škoda announced that the trains (see first photo) would be brand-named InterPanter. The second photo, taken at this event, shows, from right to left, Michal Kurtinec, general director of Škoda Vagonka, Tomáš Ignačák, general director of Škoda Transportation, Michal Štěpán, the ČD board of directors member responsible for passenger services, and Lubomíra Černá, Škoda Transportation's spokesperson.

The first cars of the first five-car EMU are currently nearing completion. The five-car trains are to be designated Class 661, and the three-car ones, Class 660. The other photos show the interior, both first and second class saloons of the train, during fitting-out, while the final photo shows the other end car of 661 001.

In response to both Czech open access operators deciding to establish services between Praha and Košice in eastern Slovakia, ČD decided to replace its only daytime locomotive-hauled train on this route by a Class 680 Pendolino service. Preparations for this included subjecting 680.004 to some EMC measurement tests in Slovakia. These were realised at the two places habitually used for this purpose with modern electric locomotives, near Skalité on the single track international line between Čadca and Zwardoń, and near Krásno nad Kysucou on the main line from Čadca to Žilina. This photo shows 680.004 on 26 August 2014 in Skalité. A couple of weeks earlier a LEO Express FLIRT had been there for the same purposes, the tests thus providing two rare opportunities to see these types of train on this line.
