This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

On 5 September 2018 the first bodyshells for the first CalTrain KISS EMU arrived from Switzerland (Altenrhein) at Stadler’s new Salt Lake City works for a final assembly.

On 19 May 2017 the one of the batch of ten new KISS EMUs ordered by WESTbahn from Stadler, 4110 011, was presented, part of the event involving a run from Wien to St. Pölten and back. This photo shows the train arriving at Wien Westbahnhof.


MÁV-Start Orders KISS EMUs

On 12 April 2017 MÁV-Start awarded Stadler a framework contract for up to 40 160 km/h six-car KISS EMUs. The first definitive order will be for eleven 600-seat trains. Deliveries are to run from spring 2019.

On 1 September culminated preparations for the start of the 2015 venue. Among the exhibits this year there are for example: 1) RZD's Lastochka ES2G-014, together with KZ4AT-0003 of KTZ, 2) one section of the TRAXX 2EV120 built by Engels-based PLK, here together with ChME3M-4628 modernised by ZMK of Engels, using a CAT diesel engine, Siemens traction and auxiliary generators and a MSV elektronika control system. 3) EG2Tv-001 EMU, 4) TG16M-001 diesel locomotive for Sakhalin, here mounted temporarily on 1,520 mm gauge bogies, 5) the final photo in the sequence shows meeting of KISS EMU ESh2-001, EP20-048 and 2ES10-120 Granit (together with its 25 kV AC version, 2ES7-001, not captured here).

On 13 May 2015, at the TransCaspian 2015 transport and logistics trade fair in Baku, it was formally announced that Stadler will provide five four-car double deck EMUs for suburban services. The contract, signed by Stadler Rail CEO Peter Spuhler and ADY chairman Cavid Qurbanov, is worth between 60 and 70 million EUR. The new 3 kV DC trains will be delivered surprisingly quickly, this being achieved by using a couple of Aeroexpress EMUs, which are currently being built at the Minsk works. The first two KISSes are to arrive in Baku in time for the First European Games (12 to 28 June).

Following the presentation event of ESh2-001 in November 2014 in Moskva, authorisation procedures of Aeroexpress KISS EMUs started at once. The first train was taken to the Shcherbinka test circuit, where test runs are to be made, some of these under winter conditions. The photo shows ESh2-001 there, together with the four-car ESh2-002 EMU, on 13 January 2015.

On 11 November 2014 ESh2-001 arrived at Imeni Ilyicha depot (named after Vladimir Ilyich Lenin), in the northwest of Moskva, near Belorusskaya station. This depot is currently the maintenance base for Aeroexpress’s single-deck EMUs. The accompanying photo taken on 12 November features ESh2-001and ED4MKM-0007.

On 6 September 2014 the first Aeroexpress KISS EMU was embarked on a barge at Muttenz, near Basel, for the descent of the Rhein to Amsterdam. Note that the cars are now mounted on their bogies, which in turn rest on specially designed palettes, fitted with short stretches of rail.

Starting in early August 2014 Stadler despatched from Altenrhein works the cars (without bogies) for the first six-car Class ESh2 KISS EMU destined for Aeroexpress. The first photo, taken on 1 September 2014, shows the last car before departure from the works. Subsequent views were taken at Rorschach station and Roggwil, en route to Basel (Muttenz), on the same day, a three-night journey. At Basel the cars will be mounted on 1,520 mm gauge bogies.
This multi-modal delivery is complicated by the train’s huge dimensions. Between Basel and Amsterdam the cars will descend the Rhein by barge, and then will be re-embarked on a ship bound for Sassnitz (arrival scheduled for 15 September). At Sassnitz the cars will be formed into the complete unit and tested. Then follows another voyage up the Baltic, to Klaipéda. Here the train is to be railed, and moved to the Stadler works at Fanipol, near Minsk, where commissioning will take place before delivery, by rail, to Moskva.
