This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

The whole Class 680 Czech Pendolino EMU fleet is being subjected to complete interior refurbishment. The first to be returned to service following this was 680.005 on train SC 241 “Pendolino Košičan” from Praha to Košice on 25 September 2017. This one is now used on this and the return eastbound service SC 240.

The refurbishment involved the replacement of most interior fittings - seats, wall panelling, carpeting, power sockets, lighting, luggage racks, visual information system. WC cubicles and the bistro area were rejuvenated too. A children’s cinema has also been created. These photos show the refurbished first and second class saloons, and also the bistro area.

On 15 December 2016 at Savigliano Alstom and NTV jointly presented the first end car of the Italo "Pendolino", around a year after NTV signed the contract. All 12 non-tilting trains (eight ordered in October 2015, four ordered in September 2016) are scheduled for delivery by December 2017, and it is planned to put them in commercial service in March 2018.

In response to both Czech open access operators deciding to establish services between Praha and Košice in eastern Slovakia, ČD decided to replace its only daytime locomotive-hauled train on this route by a Class 680 Pendolino service. Preparations for this included subjecting 680.004 to some EMC measurement tests in Slovakia. These were realised at the two places habitually used for this purpose with modern electric locomotives, near Skalité on the single track international line between Čadca and Zwardoń, and near Krásno nad Kysucou on the main line from Čadca to Žilina. This photo shows 680.004 on 26 August 2014 in Skalité. A couple of weeks earlier a LEO Express FLIRT had been there for the same purposes, the tests thus providing two rare opportunities to see these types of train on this line.

Following a journey from Warszawa on 24 and 25 April 2014 a PKP Intercity „Pendolino“ 2 370 001 - 007 arrived at the VUZ’s Velim test circuits. Haulage of the Class 237 in the Czech Republic was provided by ČD Cargo’s 363.005. Here we see the „Pendolino“ at Přelouč on 25 April.

Shortly after its arrival at the Źmigród test centre, the first Class 2 370 Polish Pendolino started making test runs, and is shown in action there on 26 August 2013. Once it has finished at Źmigród it will be moved to the CMK, and then to other parts of the PKP PLK network for further tests.

Between 8 and 12 August 2013 PKP Intercity’s first Pendolino was delivered from Italy to Poland, traversing the Czech Republic on the 10th and 11th from Břeclav to Lichkov and Międzylesie. The EMU, shown here at Ústí nad Orlicí on 11 August, is designated Class 2 370 / ED 250. Haulage over the Czech Republic northwards was in the hands of PKP Cargo, with Eurosprinter 189 153 in charge. Initial testing is to take place at the Źmigród test centre.

The large test track circuit (Železniční zkušební okruh, ŽZO) near the villages of Cerhenice and Velim, around 50 km east of Praha, was inaugurated in June 1963. On 20 May 2013 VUZ (Výzkumný Ústav Železniční - Rail Research Institute), which runs the testing complex, invited more than 200 guests to celebrate its 50th anniversary, which was marked by the presence of some interesting items of rolling stock. These included ČD’s Pendolino 680.003 and ÖBB’s railjet rake 80-90.716, the latter powered by 1216 229 (both locomotive and stock having participated in the presentation tour from Wien to Praha and Ostrava in April 2013). This train travelled from Austria via Havlíčkův Brod, and the accompanying photos show it first arriving at Kolín, then at nearby Velim station, and finally on the large test circuit. Both the 680 and the railjet were used to take guests on trips round the large test circuit. There were several other static „exhibits“ to be seen, including Class 146.5 and 187 TRAXXes. The final photo in the sequence shows the railjet on its return run to Austria, passing through Kolín.
