This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

Spain’s first high speed line, from Madrid to Sevilla, was inaugurated on 21 April 1992. To commemorate the event, GEC-Alstom-built 100.111 was repainted in its original livery, and renamed „Miguel de Cervantes“. This photo shows it on the 08.55 service on 21 April passing through Getafe, in the southern suburbs of Madrid, bound for Sevilla. The double track in the background is the new parallel high speed line between Madrid and Torrejón de Velasco, designed to separate Andalucían high speed trains from those bound for Levante.

  • Albacete To Alacant HSL Inaugration

On 6 June 2013 it was announced that the Albacete to Alacant high speed line would be inaugurated on 18 June, the nine train pairs daily (ten on Fridays) between Madrid and Alacant offering a journey time of 2h20, 50 minutes faster than at present, calling en route at Cuenca, Albacete and Villena. Services are to be provided by Class 100 and Class 112 trains, with Class 130s on the weekend services from Alacant to Santander and Gijón and Class 730 electro-diesels on Alacant to A Coruña and Vigo services. Tickets are to go on sale from 10 June with an initial fare promotion offering a 50% discount in Turista class, from 18 to 25 June, resulting in the standard single fare of 64.90 EUR being cut to 32.45 EUR. Here we see a Class 730 electro-diesel on test in late April 2013 near Monovar, in the vicinity of Elda.


RENFE Class 100 On Test In France

RENFE’s 100.024 started life as a dual-voltage (3 and 25 kV) 1,668 mm gauge Class 101 in the mid-1990s, used on Barcelona to València and Alacant Euromed services. A few years ago the train was re-gauged to 1,435 mm for use on Madrid to Sevilla services (and lost its 3 kV DC capability). In summer 2012 it was sent to Alstom’s La Sagra works, to be equipped for operation off 1.5 kV DC. Here we see the train at Laroche-Migennes on 19 December 2012, during a test run under 1.5 kV DC. Further tests are planned between Perpignan and Figueres, since the train is one of a batch of Class 100s being equipped for services linking Spain with France starting in summer 2013.
