On 16 June 2023 Stadler announced that it was contract by the Italian region of Valle d’Aosta for four FLIRT EMUs. This order marks the sale of the 2,500th FLIRT. The success story of the FLIRT began with a first order in 2002, from SBB, for twelve units to Stadtbahn Zug and a further 30 ones to S-Bahn Basel. Around 20 years since the first vehicle was ordered, the FLIRT is now in operation in 21 countries - from the Arctic Circle to North Africa.

In 2015, the Valle d’Aosta region ordered the first FLIRTs, with a dual-power solution, i. e. five Class BTR 813 DEMUs with a maximum speed of 160 km/h  in electric mode and 140 km/h in diesel mode. Their delivery was scheduled for May 2018 and part of the contract was an option for five more. In March 2021, the purchase of three more BTR 813s, financed by the State, was approved, which formed part of the option in the 2015 contract,  all eight destined for the Turin - Aosta services.

In autumn 2022, it was announced that the three additional trains would be built only in electric version due to the electrification of the line, with the possibility of adding a diesel module if necessary.
