Siemens Mobility has successfully completed the modernization of the Kijfhoek freight yard for ProRail, with the facility now operating at full capacity using a state-of-the-art automated system. As the Netherlands' largest freight rail yard, Kijfhoek serves as a crucial hub connecting the Port of Rotterdam with major European industrial centers. The implementation of advanced automation technologies has significantly enhanced operational efficiency and economic viability of freight transport through the facility and strengthens its logistical significance. The 110 million EUR project, awarded in 2021, was successfully completed in May this year.

Jens Nordmann, Head of Mainline at Siemens Mobility: “The modernization of Kijfhoek demonstrates how intelligent automation transforms rail freight operations. By implementing our advanced Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system, we are significantly enhancing operational efficiency and thus setting new standards for sustainable freight transport in Europe. This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering solutions that make cargo movement faster, more efficient, and more reliable. We're proud to strengthen our long-standing partnership with ProRail and contribute to the Netherlands' position as a key European logistics hub.”

The Trackguard Cargo MSR32 system delivers comprehensive yard automation, featuring advanced route and speed control units, retarders, and propelling systems, alongside radio-based integration for precise humping locomotive control. This sophisticated solution optimizes the entire operational sequence, from train arrival through classification to departure, significantly enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

The facility, spanning 50 hectares southeast of Rotterdam, represents the Netherlands' largest freight yard with its extensive infrastructure of 14 arrival tracks, 41 classification tracks, and 12 stabling tracks. As a vital logistics hub between the Port of Rotterdam and European industrial centers, Kijfhoek's modernization is supported by a 15-year maintenance service agreement, ensuring sustained operational excellence and reduced lifecycle costs.
