New ÖBB Desiro ML EMUs being built

posted on 30th May 2023 10:10

From early October 2023, it is planned to put into service for Verkehrsverbund Tirol the new four-car Cityjet Desiro ML EMUs. Initially they will run on the Innsbruck - Kufstein section from that date. Then operation will be gradually extended to the Innsbruck - Landeck line and from June 2024 to the Wörgl - Salzburg line.

The first Class 4748 units are currently being built at the ÖBB Train Tech (ex Technische Services) works in Jedlersdorf in Wien - here the exterior paintwork created for Tyrol has been completed. In May ÖBB and the Land of Tyrol showed the new trains for the first time. Their special feature is that with a 100 m length they will be the longest regional units in Tyrol; they thus offer a total of 290 seats.

The first of a total of 20 Desiros will be completed later this year. They will be transported to Tyrol in August and will be used for training purposes until the start of passenger service in October. They are replacing the Class 4758 Talent EMUs, whose contract has been cancelled by ÖBB in 2021.

Desiro ML EMUs have been running for ÖBB since 2015 (Class 4744 and 4746). Initially, they were mainly used in the eastern region, but since 2021 they have also been in service in western Austria.
