On 17 January 2021, Škoda Vagonka of Ostrava put into operation a new machining centre with a mobile portal, thanks to which it can machine oversized aluminum bodyshell components.

The machining centre, supplied by the Czech company STROJÍRNA TYC, is at present the most modern and largest facility of its kind in Europe. Its length is 49.5 m, the maximum dimension of the workpiece is 39 x 4.5 m.

The machining centre consists of two independent portals with a continuously controlled five-axis head with up to 12,000 rpm. The installation of the machine is part of an extensive „Nová Vagonka“ („The New carriage works“) investment project, the implementation of which began in February 2020 and which aims to double the vehicle production.

Martin Bednarz, Škoda Vagonka CEO, adds: „The new machining centre enables us the machining of up to 28 m long aluminum bodyshell subassemblies, such as broad gauge bodies for the Latvian RegioPanter EMUs. Overall, the capacity in the production of aluminum bodyshells will increase up to fivefold, to 20 ones per month.“
