First Class 398 Tram-Train For TfW In Britain

On 13 May 2022, Transport for Wales announced that 398 001, first of a batch 36 Citylink vehicles, arrived in Britain from Valencia works. Its testing will start at the Rail Innovation & Development Centre in Melton, Leicestershire in the coming weeks. Stadler is building 36 three-car dual-power Citylink tram-trains (catenary and battery) which have a top speed of 100 km/h.

The 40 m long vehicles are scheduled to start passenger service in 2023 on the Core Valley Line routes to Treherbert, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and the Cardiff Bay branch. They will also operate on-street running on a short new line to Flourish. They will be maintained at a new depot at Taff’s Well, which is currently under construction.
