The further modernization of the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe's light rail fleet is now official: the KVB Board of Directors and the management of the Swiss vehicle manufacturer Stadler announced the launch of their future collaboration on 7 October 2025 in Köln. KVB has commissioned Stadler to build 132 high-floor vehicles in the contract worth almost 700 million EUR. The first units will be delivered in 2029.
Two connected trams will offer space for 470 passengers. This is one of the special features of the contract: a quick-release point allows two units to be connected to form a continuous tram. The order also includes 34 intermediate modules, each 10 m long, which will enable the trains to be extended to around 70 m.
