On 30 June 2026, Škoda Group has won the tender for the supply of new trams for Uppsala. The order includes the supply of 20 bidirectional trams with an option for up to 18 ones. The contract also includes long-term maintenance and overhaul, thanks to which the Uppsala region will receive a comprehensive solution for the entire life cycle of the vehicles for a completely new tram system that will become the backbone of the city's public transport. The total value of the contract, including optional vehicles, service services, supplies of key components and technical support, can reach up to 270 million EUR.

The new trams are based on the platform developed for Tampere. Their design connects the historical character of Uppsala with its modern architectural development. The characteristic front of the vehicle, clearly legible external information elements and advanced safety technologies were designed with the safe movement of pedestrians and a pleasant passenger experience in mind.

The trams will be 38 m long and 100% low-floor. They will offer a capacity of 186 passengers (at an occupancy rate of 2.5/m2), of which 80 will be seated. On each side, the trams will be equipped with three double-leaf and two single-leafe doors, which will enable a quick change of passengers.

The latest digital safety technologies will also be an important part of the vehicles. The advanced anti-collision system developed at Škoda will help prevent collisions with cars, pedestrians and obstacles on the track. The trams will also be equipped with an Intelligent Speed Limiter System, which will adjust the vehicle speed in curves and other selected sections of the track. These technologies will contribute to increasing the safety and reliability of operation.

Future users will also participate in the final design of the trams. Special attention will be paid to the driver's workplace, which will be created in cooperation with the drivers themselves

In addition to the delivery of the vehicles, the contract also includes a 12-year maintenance contract and a 12-year overhaul contract, both with the possibility of extension for another year. The overhaul program will cover not only the vehicles themselves, but also key high-value components. The contract also includes long-term technical support and a comprehensive warranty program.

New tram network to support city development

The construction of a new tram line is one of the key projects in Uppsala’s long-term development. Approximately 17 km of double-track line with 22 stops will connect important locations, university and hospital campuses, major transport hubs and the main railway station. The project is being prepared jointly by the City of Uppsala and the Uppsala Region with the aim of creating a capacious, accessible and sustainable public transport system for residents, students, commuters and visitors to the city.
