CargoBeamer launches new service from Stuttgart to Milan

posted on 14th Apr 2026 12:42

CargoBeamer has launched a new service between Stuttgart and Milan on 13 April 2026. The intermodal operator, which specialises in the rail transport of non-craneable semi-trailers, further strengthens its offering between Germany and Italy via the Swiss Alps, following the launch of the Liège - Domodossola service in January.

The service will initially operate with a frequency of four weekly roundtrips, with an increase to five weekly roundtrips planned in the medium term. Trains run between the DUSS Terminal in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart and the Malpensa Intermodale terminal, which is part of FNM group and located in Sacconago, near Busto Arsizio, in the north-west of the Greater Milan area. The service succeeds the previously operated connection between Stuttgart-Kornwestheim and Domodossola. CargoBeamer will once again partner with SBB Cargo International for rail traction. Per transported semi-trailer, the service enables CO₂ savings of around 88 % compared to diesel road transport.

With the new Stuttgart - Milan service, CargoBeamer adds another connection to its transalpine network on the corridor between Germany and the Benelux countries and Italy, enabling the transport of all types of semi-trailers. In addition to standard craneable units, the service is open to non-craneable trailers, including refrigerated and box trailers, waste transport units, as well as containers and swap bodies. Stuttgart - Milan is the second new connection launched by CargoBeamer to succeed the discontinued Rolling Highway between Freiburg and Novara, ensuring continued capacity for the intermodal transport of non-craneable semi-trailers across the Alps.

Following the highly successful launch of the Liège - Domodossola service, we are seeing strong momentum and clear demand for additional capacity in intermodal transport between south-west Germany and the Greater Milan area," explains Boris Timm, COO of CargoBeamer. „Our new service addresses this need directly. With our new partner terminal Milan-Sacconago, we are excellently positioned to serve road and air freight-oriented cargo flows and continue to expand our network in northern Italy."
