Design for Vande Bharat EMUs unveiled

posted on 2nd Nov 2025 06:50

A full-scale mockup of a first-class sleeper compartment for India's Vande Bharat EMUs (25 kV 50 Hz) was unveiled at the IREE 2025 (International Railway Equipment Exhibition) in New Delhi, which took place from between 15 and 17 October.

The design concept was developed as part of a contract for the supply and long-term maintenance of 120 electric trains for Indian Railways, worth up to 6.5 billion USD. The contract is being implemented by Kinet Railway Solutions, a joint venture between Transmashholding and India's RVNL. This is the largest partnership project in the Indian-Russian railway industry.

The compartment is designed with passenger comfort in mind on long-distance routes. It is equipped with personal USB chargers and lamps, ergonomic stairs, storage compartments for personal belongings, bottle holders, and an additional overhead luggage rack. Along with the interior, an updated exterior concept for future trains was presented, reflecting modern automotive design trends - from the lighting to a dynamic silhouette. Both interior and exterior concepts are undergoing approval by the customer.

In 2023, a TMH-led consortium won an international tender for the development, production, and 35-year service of 1,920 Vande Bharat long-distance electric train cars for Indian Railways. Currently, the modernization of the production site in Latur, Maharashtra, is being completed, and personnel training has been organized at the company's own training center. Construction of a depot in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is underway, and an engineering center is operational in Hyderabad, Telangana.
