First Mireo for ÖBB - as a railjet!

In 2024, ÖBB ordered 70 + 30 Mireo EMUs for suburban and regional transport from Siemens Mobility. These form part of a framework contract from the summer of 2023 for up to 540 units. At the end of January 2026, the first one of a Class 4864 left the Siemens Krefeld works, surprisingly in the railjet design. ÖBB replied to our question that "these units will be deployed on the new IR lines. Of 100 units ordered, 69 Cityjet regional trains and 31 long-distance trains for services within the Alps will be built. The first long-distance Mireos will enter service from 2028. We will provide details on this in the coming months."
