RAILPOOL and NTT expand maintenance capacity at Sweden’s most important transport hub

On 26 August 2026, Jernhusen has put its signature on a 20-year lease with NTT (NTT Sverige AB). NTT is owned by the rolling stock leasing company RAILPOOL, based in München. The lease concerns a new 1,100 m2 lathing facility with wheel lathes, to be operated by NTT. It will also be the first modern facility of its kind in the Västra Götaland region.
It will be equipped with an advanced “tandem lathe”, which means that two wheel axles can be processed at the same time. This will cut down the lathing process time by half compared to traditional facilities, allowing rolling stock to return to service faster. The facility will also be equipped for lathing work on brake plates, and a streamlined wave-off feature for engines and passenger trains.
Stefan Christensson, CEO of NTT, explains: “Together with Jernhusen, we are creating an important hub for the future of railway maintenance in Scandinavia. The investment in Gothenburg not only improves maintenance capacity in the region but also contributes to shorter transport distances, lower environmental impact, and increased accessibility for our customers.”
Peter Larsson, Operations Manager for Depots and Freight Terminals at Jernhusen, said: “Västra Götaland receiving its first modern lathing facility is a massive boost for the entire region’s railway capacity. Shorter throughput times and reduced need for long journeys whenever rolling stock is in need of maintenance means substantial operating and environmental gains.”
This lease and the aforementioned investments mark an important milestone for the Fjällbo depot. At the same time as the lathing facility is being constructed, the area, which has lacked electrical infrastructure for 15 - 20 years, will also be electrified. The new infrastructure will allow electric locomotives and passenger trains to travel directly to the area and its facilities without first having to swap for a diesel engine. This provides a dramatically improved capacity, boosted efficiency, and a smaller environmental impact for train operators, since they no longer need to undertake long non-revenue journeys just to undergo maintenance.
Construction on the new wheel lathe shop is expected to begin in October 2026, with the facility and electrification to be completed sometime in the second quarter of 2028. This will mark the first step of a larger development plan for Fjällbo. Jernhusen intends to continue to develop the Fjällbo depot area to further bolster Gothenburg as a central hub for the sustainable transport of both goods and people of tomorrow.
