On 22 December 2025, ZSSK announced that it had ended the public tender for the modernization of 33 two-car Class 813 DMUs, nicknamed "bageta" ("baguettes)". The renewal will be ensured by ŽOS Zvolen, which has many years of experience with this type of vehicle and access to the original technical documentation, which will enable rapid modernization, accessible maintenance and the preservation of jobs in the Slovak railway industry.

The project is financed from ZSSK's own resources, the first modernized units should be put into operation as early as 2026. "This step represents a rational solution for regional lines with lower speeds (up to 90 km/h), where modernization or electrification is not expected in the foreseeable future. It is precisely on these local lines that DMUs are necessary, as the EMUs such as the Panters or KISSes cannot operate there, and at the same time, these are sections with unfavorable track conditions unsuitable for long and high-capacity vehicles."

Of the 44 units of the Class 813 fleet, 33 ones will be modernized, the rest will be phased out after their lifetime. Each upgraded "bageta" gets air conditioning, new seats, upholstery, lighting, outlets, Wi-Fi and USB ports. The interior will be supplemented with space for bicycles and strollers. The modernization will also reduce the number of the last regional trains with an open WC system.

The comprehensive renovation will take place on the basis of the offer in in the amount of 935,000 EUR without VAT for one unit, which was lower than the estimated value. Modernization will extend the life of these trains by 10 to 15 years.
