On 14 October 2026, the Railway Reform Authority (ARF, Autoritatea pentru Reformă Feroviară) announced the results of its bid evaluation for the contract: "Procurement of 23 new electric locomotives equipped with ERTMS, capable of a maximum speed of 160 km/h and hauling up to 16 coaches, including the maintenance and repair services necessary for their operation." Maintenance by the manufacturer is planned for a 20-year period, with an option for an additional 20 years.
The evaluation committee selected the bid submitted by a consortium consisting of Siemens Mobility SRL and Siemens Mobility Austria GmbH (with no declared subcontractors) as the winning offer. Other participants in the tender included Alstom and Softronic. The total value of the project is 764,398,846.68 RON (153,966,774.77 EUR), and the project implementation period is 42 months.
It is not yet known whether the locomotives will be of the Vectron or Smartron family. The contract may be signed once the period for filing appeals has expired, or - should any appeals or complaints be raised during the procurement process - once these have been resolved.
