The work is underway at NEVZ on the new Class 2ES9 locomotive with an asynchronous propulsion. Assembly of the first prototype was completed in the second half of October, followed by the testing - initially static, to be succeeded by test runs on the NEVZ-own test circuit.
The Class 2ES9 locomotive has a Co‘Co‘ + Co‘Co‘ wheel arrangement, a continuous power output of 12,600 kW, and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. It is designed to haul trains weighing up to 7,100 tonnes (comprising 71 four-axle wagons with an axle load of 25 tonnes), in accordance with RZD requirements for electric locomotives intended for the Eastern Polygon.
The control system is built on a new architecture; it transmits data regarding the status of components and systems to a remote server and automatically shuts down traction motors when the locomotive is under partial load. The interval between major overhauls is 4 million km.
