CITYLINK tram-trains for Aarhus

posted on 6th Dec 2025 11:28

On 2 December 2025, Stadler has been awarded a contract to build eight CITYLINK tram-trains for Aarhus. Thanks to their on-board batteries, these vehicles can continue operating seamlessly even when overhead wires are iced over. The contract signed between Aarhus Letbane and Stadler also includes an option for an additional twelve vehicles as well as spare parts management.

This agreement builds on a successful partnership that began several years ago, when Stadler supplied trams and tram-trains for Aarhus’ light rail network. The new CITYLINKs will be designed and built at Stadler Valencia.

“Adding more trains strengthens the Light Rail as a vital connection between Aarhus city and the countryside. This is fully in line with our vision of providing reliable and efficient transport for East Jutland – on time, every time. And it’s a major benefit for our passengers and for the entire region,” says Mie Krog, Chair of the Board at Aarhus Letbane.

The four-car Citylink tram-trains are 49 m long, have a top speed of 100 km/h and room for 152 seated and 180 standing passengers – a total of 332 passengers. This is 80 more than the current Tango trains. The new longer trains also have four double doors and two flex rooms, thus also improving the possibility of bringing bicycles and strollers. There will be retractable steps at the doors to the flex rooms, which improves accessibility.

In addition, the new vehicels are equipped with a battery pack that allows the trains to run up to 10 km without power from overhead lines – a solution that provides flexibility and allows the Citylinks to run, even when there is ice on the overhead lines or otherwise no power.

The agreement means that from the summer of 2029 the light rail in Aarhus can increase the number of departures – also during rush hours, and that there will be room for even more passengers: the number of departures for passengers on L2 from Lystrup/Nye and Lisbjergskolen will double, both of which will have 15-minute service to/from Aarhus H during the day.

At the same time, the number of departures between Aarhus H and Aarhus University Hospital will be increased, so that a light rail train will run in each direction every 5 minutes. At the other end of L2, passengers in Odder will also experience a doubling of the number of departures – from 30-minute service to 15-minute service during the day on weekdays.
