Civity Nordic For SJ

On 8 July 2022, SJ and CAF signed a contract worth around 300 million EUR for 25 regional EMUs, with an option for 35 more. They will be five-car Civity Nordic EMUs with a maximum speed of 200 km/h, designed for regional and inter-regional services and equipped to withstand the extreme weather conditions in Sweden, in a snowy environment with temperatures falling as low as -40 °C. Up to three units will be able to run in multiple, providing approximately 1,000 seats.

We asked CAF for the technical data of the new EMUs - axle arrangement, supply voltage(s), traction power, brake power, dimensions, weights, capacity, and for the class designation by the operator. CAF answered us: "At the moment we will not give more technical details of the unit."

The first new trains are scheduled to stat pasenger service in 2026. The fleet will be used on Stockholm - Västerås - Örebro - Skövde - Göteborg, Stockholm - Uppsala, Linköping - Norrköping - Stockholm - Arlanda - Uppsala - Gävle - Ljusdal and Kalmar - Göteborg lines.

SJ is currently implementing a plan to upgrade its fleet - with some of the units nearing the end of their service life - and to expand the capacity of its trains to accommodate the expected demand growth over the course of the next few years. On 6 April 2022, Alstom has signed an agreement with SJ to supply 25 Zefiro Express high-speed trains, with an option for 15 more. Also the renewal of the Type X2000 fleet is (finally) in full swing and SJ currently has four completely refurbished EMU in service.
