The Italian freight operator FS Logistix has selected Stadler's bi-mode locomotive platform EUROLIGHT Dual for its company Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal. The order further consolidates the success of a locomotive family specifically developed for Italy and represents a further step in FS Logistix’s strategy to modernise its assets.
The EUROLIGHT Dual was specifically developed for the requirements of the Italian network. Combining 3 kV DC traction equipment with a Stage V diesel engine, and with a reduced axle load of just 20 tonnes, it is suitable for operation on both main lines and secondary lines. The Bo'Bo' locomotive delivers up to 3,000 kW in electric mode and a starting tractive effort of 330 kN, while incorporating ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2, SCMT and SSC safety systems to ensure full compatibility with the national network.
The locomotives will be built at Stadler Valencia.
Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix, said: “The acquisition of eight EUROLIGHT Dual locomotives is part of an overall investment programme of approximately 1 billion EUR and will expand our availability of modern, efficient and flexible assets across the Italian network. Through these investments, we also aim to reduce the environmental footprint of logistics operations and make rail and intermodal transport increasingly competitive alternatives to road transport.”
Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal is a leading operator in Italy for railway shunting activities at ports, terminals and stations. Through its extensive service network and its own fleet of more than 200 locomotives, the company also provides leasing solutions to meet market demand and support the operations of FS Group companies.
Stadler, FS Logistix, through its subsidiary Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, and Trenitalia will jointly present the new EUROLIGHT Dual locomotive at InnoTrans 2026. The event will take place on 22 September at 11:00 at the Stadler stand (Hall 2.2, Stand 230).
