Ten days of demonstrations, tests, and substantive presentations between 5 and 15 May 2025 - this is what the next major step by PESA on its way to the Scandinavian markets looks like. The SM42-6Dg 001 hydrogen locomotive arrived on 4 May by the Polonia ferry from Świnoujście to Ystad, and from there by rail to Stockholm and other Swedish cities where it will be presented to potential customers.
Maciej Grześkowiak, Director of Strategic Projects at PESA, said: “The Sweden H2 Roadshow is the next stage of our cooperation with the Swedish companies Hankavik and VÄTE Rail, with whom we signed an agreement at InnoTrans 2024. Together, we have prepared a series of tests and presentations on railway sidings and in the terminals of the largest Swedish seaports. The interest in our hydrogen locomotive here is really high.”
PESA, Hankavik, and VÄTE Rail also participated in the largest Scandinavian railway trade fair, Train & Rail, which took place in Stockholm from 6 to 8 May. Trade fair participants could also observe the operation of the hydrogen shunting locomotive during special demonstrations in the nearby Stockholm Årsta Kombiterminal.
Tests and demonstrations of the PESA hydrogen locomotive are planned, on railway sidings and terminals as follows:
5 May: SSAB Oxelösund,
6 - 8 May: Train & Rail Stockholm,
12 May: SSAB Borlänge,
13 May: Port of Göteborg,
14 May: Port of Trelleborg,
15 May: Port of Malmö.
Filip Forslund, Group CEO at VÄTE Bolagen AB, summarized: “We are really satisfied with the results of the first tests. During trials with large loads of 950 - 1,500 tons the locomotive had no trouble even on routes with gradients of 15 ‰.” The Swedish operator plans to introduce the first hydrogen shunting locomotives into operation by 2028.
In addition to the SM42-6Dn prototype presented in Sweden, PESA has begun work on projects for a new hydrogen locomotive and a passenger vehicle powered by electric traction and hydrogen cells. The company has also launched its largest investment program to date, including automation, laser welding, and the construction of new production and storage halls. Thanks to these investments, PESA will significantly increase the production capacity of its plant in Bydgoszcz.
