New RockTainer ORE wagons for CargoServ

posted on 20th Mar 2026 08:18

CargoServ transports approximately 1.8 million tons of iron ore annually from the Erzberg mountain in Styria to Linz. The Erzberg is a crucial source of raw materials, continuously supplying the voestalpine Linz site with ore, with three to four round trips daily. With a distance of only 130 km, no state borders, and few rail construction sites, supply security is very high, and volumes can be adjusted quickly to meet current demands and geopolitical challenges.

From early 2026, 30 new Innofreight RockTainer ORE wagons, each carrying two containers, will be used for this purpose. The first rake of 15 wagons was delivered and put into operation at the end of January, followed by the second obne at the end of February. Four of the wagons feature a special blue and red design commemorating the upcoming 25th anniversary of LogServ and CargoServ.

A total of 30 Innofreight double wagons with gravity unloading and short couplings will handle traffic between Eisenerz and Linz, replacing the previously used TransANT wagons, which also met the requirements of ore transport very well. The wagon conversion will therefore not result in any major changes to operations. Switching to the RockTainer ORE will allow for savings in wagon costs. As the most common and proven wagon type, it is already in use on ore routes between Eisenerz and Donawitz.

The majority of the wagons are painted in the green Styrian livery, matching the route. Four wagons feature a special blue or red design and will serve as "anniversary ambassadors" on the Linz - Eisenerz route.
