New SFM EMUs arrive in Mallorca

posted on 6th Mar 2024 11:22

In early March 2024 the first of five new CAF-built EMUs was disembarked in Mallorca for use on the Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) network. Once railed, the EMUs are moved from the quayside at Palma de Mallorca to Son Rullan. The first train was subjected to testing at CAF's factory in Irún and will now undertake further tests on the SFM network, with a view to putting in commercial service in June, by which time the remaining four trains will be on the island.

In 2022 SFM awarded CAF a 54.6 million EUR contract for the five four-car EMUs, this also covering maintenance during the first two years of their lives. The trains are 90 % co-financed from EU funds. They are the first members of the SFM fleet to have aluminium bodyshells, and are thus lighter than the earlier CAF-built Class 8100 EMUs on the island. They are also 4 m longer than the Class 8100s, with a greater passenger and bike capacity. Each car has three, instead of two pairs of entrance doors. The CCTV systems are connected to screens in SFM's traffic control centre and provide real-time footage.
