On 7 November 2025, SBB selected Siemens Mobility Schweiz in a public tender as the supplier of 116 new double-deck EMUs for the S-Bahn Zürich (95 trains) and Western Switzerland (21 trains). The offer for trains, which will be derived from the Desiro HC family, was assessed by SBB as the most economically and qualitatively advantageous.
Hitachi Rail and Stadler Rail also participated in the tender. The latter then filed an appeal with the BVGer (Bundesverwaltungsgericht, Federal Administrative Court) on 27 November 2025. However, Stadler Rail eventually withdrew this appeal and on 6 April 2026 SBB informed that they could definitively award the contract to Siemens Mobility Schweiz.
The contract will now be signed and can continue: over the next two years, the project of the new Swiss version of the Desiro HC will be completed and then production will begin. The first units are due to enter service in 2031, and SBB also has an option for another 84 vehicles.
