NEXRAIL lease has concluded a contract with Stadler for the delivery of up to 200 EURO9000 locomotives in an electro-battery version. Unlike the locomotives of this type ordered or delivered so far, they will not be equipped with diesel genset, but with a traction battery. The battery module will consist of 636 kWh LTO batteries with up to 1,200 kW of power, enabling the optimization of benefits such as regenerative braking, grid peaking charges, and arbitrage of cost volatility by timing energy purchases and regenerative power.
The locomotive parameters when running under the catenary remain standard, i. e. output of up to 9,000 kW under AC systems, 6,400 kW under 3 kV DC and 4,500 kW under 1.5 kV DC. Deliveries should begin in 2029. NEXRAIL lease has also already announced the first customer - Hamburger Rail Service (HRS).
„We are proud to support NEXRAIL in bringing the EURO9000 battery bimodal locomotives to market,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia. „This order highlights our joint commitment to sustainable innovation in rail freight. By combining high-power electric performance with emission-free battery operation, the EURO9000 sets a new benchmark for flexible, green traction solutions across Europe.”
