PJ Monitoring offers the comprehensive ‘DAC 4.5’ solution, which comprises tried-and-tested coupling technology and digital train functions that can be combined, such as the automatic brake test. The solution also includes system integration and type approval.
The system uses Voith‘s CargoFlex technology, enabling simple and safe operation via a ‚push-button‘ interface. Additional digital, intelligent applications, together with the PJ Monitoring Group’s engineering and certification expertise, complete the package. The result is a comprehensive solution featuring tried-and-tested technology, combinable digital train functions, system integration and approval.
With its unique WaggonTracker platform, PJM is at the forefront of innovation, as it combines comprehensive monitoring, safety-critical automation and a reliable power supply in a single system. In addition to its use on wagons fitted with UIC standard couplings, the PJM system has also proven its worth in conjunction with digital automatic coupling. PJM offers the DAC basic package for commercial use in collaboration with its technology partner, Voith. This technical solution comprises mechanical, pneumatic and electrical coupling functions, as well as uncoupling at the touch of a button, an automatic brake test, wagon sequencing and train integrity.
The available system is clearly designed for real-world operation. It is safe and easy to use, significantly reduces the time required for train preparation and is therefore a genuine driver of efficiency. The advantages were demonstrated during pilot phases and operational trials: uncoupling at the vehicle is carried out by pushing button, which represents a significant element of automation. The conventional need to switch the wagon system on and off for safety and regulatory reasons is eliminated. The digital coupling system is permanently available, user-friendly and safe, and also features a constant power supply.
The DAC is much more than just a technical solution: integration and certification are also key components of the overall project. However, the DAC project cannot be considered complete until the technical solution has been finalised. While the technology is an important milestone, the equally crucial areas of integration and certification still need to be addressed.
The regulatory framework is highly complex, national regulations vary considerably and there are no established reference paths as the DAC is innovative. PJ Monitoring is the ideal partner for this extremely delicate and complex process: the PJM Group now comprises seven specialised companies which, together, cover the entire process involved in the development of rail vehicles and components. These include:
- Development of a modification concept, including full system integration and the preparation of the necessary documentation for installation in the vehicles (PJ Monitoring and PJ Motion),
- Documentation of strength, running characteristics and derailment safety (simulation of a push-on test), as well as the performance of EMC tests (radio interference emissions) by an accredited testing body (PJ Messtechnik GmbH),
- Comprehensive authorisation management (PJ Motion),
- AsBo assessment of the requirements capture process and the risk management procedure; NoBo (and, where applicable, DeBo) conformity assessment of the components to be fitted and the modifications to the vehicle (Railway Competence & Certification GmbH, which is part of the PJM Group).
A recent example of this is the extensive and successful testing of the first DAC freight train as part of a comprehensive operational trial. This train, which is the first to be approved for commercial operation, is fitted with Voith’s CargoFlex coupling system and PJM’s automatic brake test system. The latter plays a key role in the digitalisation of rail freight transport. Both systems operate daily in challenging railway conditions in limestone transport operations.
