In early January 2022, Stadler Rail completed the first of 22 EUROLIGHT diesel locomotives ordered by Spanish infrastructure manager Adif in October 2019.
Following the announcement of the results of bidding on 31 July 2019, the binding contract with Stadler Rail València, in consortium with Erion Mantenimiento Ferroviario, was signed. The contract with Adif Alta Velocidad for 22 rescue locomotives is worth 114.9 million EUR, including an eight-year maintenance agreement.
The locomotives are based on the EUROLIGHT design, and are Bo’Bo’ diesel-electric machines with the 2,800 kW CAT C175-16 engine, AC/AC transmission, and a top speed of 160 km/h. The starting traction effort is 333 kN, wheelset diameter 1 100 mm (new), minimum curve radius negotiable 150 m in service and 80 m in the depot. The locomotives are equipped with a 5 000 l fuel tank and a 500 l urea tank. Weight in working order is 86 t. They will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 and ASFA digital and GSM-R.
Consortium partner Erion Mantenimiento Ferroviario, a joint venture between Stadler Rail Valencia (51 %) and Renfe Operadora (49 %), will provide maintenance. Erion already provides rolling stock maintenance services to public and private operators in Spain, Portugal, France and Germany.
The locomotives are intended for use on the 1,435 mm gauge high speed network for infrastructure inspection purposes, rescue of stranded trains, snow clearance and hauling of infrastructure maintenance trains, with trailing loads of up to 600 t. They will be designed to operate in an ambient temperature range of +45 °C to -25 °C.
The first two Class 336 locomotives are to be delivered within 36 months after the contract signing (i. e. until October 2022), and the remainder within 40 months (until February 2023).
