On 24 August 2026, Siemens Mobility, in a consortium with general infrastructure contractor Aarsleff Rail, has successfully completed the full delivery of the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail. Passengers can now use the 28 km route, connecting Ishøj in the south to Lundtofte, north of Lyngby, via 29 stations along Ring 3.
The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail is a major new cross-regional public transport connection that strengthens mobility across the Copenhagen metropolitan area, linking cities, workplaces, hospitals, educational institutions, and key public transport hubs. Siemens Mobility's turnkey contributions included 29 Avenio light rail vehicles, electrification, signaling, communication systems, depot workshop equipment, project management, system integration, and 15 years of maintenance services. The line is expected to facilitate green transportation for approximately 12,000 passengers daily, with an annual ridership forecast of 14 million by 2030.
The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail project has been delivered through strong and constructive collaboration between Siemens Mobility, Aarsleff Rail, and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail. Initially opened in October 2025 with the first 12 stations, the completion of the remaining 17 stations now fully connects eight municipalities and integrates into six S-train interchanges.
Passengers benefit from frequent and reliable services, with light rail vehicles running every 5 - 8 minutes during peak daytime hours in a transition period of 3 - 6 months and every ten minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. This accessibility makes it easier than ever for passengers to embrace sustainable commuting options while significantly lowering car traffic volumes in one of Denmark’s busiest regions.
