On 24 August 2020 Bombardier Transportation announced that it has completed the local assembly work on the first of the batch of 27 driverless INNOVIA Metro 300 trains ordered in October 2017 for the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line in Kuala Lumpur. The bodyshells for these four-car metro trains are being manufactured in Plattsburgh, USA, the bogies are being produced in Sahagun, Mexico. The final assembly and interior fitting-out is being realised in Malaysia, at the Westport facility in Kuala Lumpur of the Bombardier Hartasuma Consortium (BHC), as part of ongoing initiatives to upskill Malaysia’s workforce.

As a committed local partner, Bombardier has received the subsequent orders from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd for a total of 374 metro cars, making them one of the largest INNOVIA fleets in the world:
- in 1994 - 70 INNOVIA ART 200 cars (35 two-car trains),
- in 2006 - 140 INNOVIA ART 200 cars (35 four-car trains),
- in 2012 - 56 INNOVIA Metro 300 cars (14 four-car trains),
- in 2017 - 108 INNOVIA Metro 300 cars (27 four-car trains).

These 750 V DC bi-directional trains with the 1,435 mm track gauge and aluminium bodyshells have a maximum design speed of 90 km/h and a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h. The trains are fitted with a 155 kW linear induction motor in each bogie, this resulting in the Type INNOVIA ART 200 four-car train’s continuous power of 1,240 kW, an acceleration rate of 1.25 m/s², a braking rate of 1.0 m/s² and an emergency braking rate of 2.4 m/s². The two-car trains have a continuous power of 620 kW.

Overall length of the INNOVIA ART 200 four-car train is 67,100 mm (end cars 16,850 mm, intermediate cars 16,700 mm) and the overall width is 2,570 mm. The bogie wheelbase is 1,900 mm. Empty weight of the end car is 22,000 kg, that of the intermediate car is 21,500 kg, and the number of seats is 30, plus a wheelchair space.

For both types of trains, the minimum curve radius negotiable on the line is 70 m and the maximum gradient 62.5 ‰. Equipped with the MITRAC propulsion technology, the driverless metro units provide convenient transport for around 300,000 daily commuters on the Kelana Jaya LRT line while meeting the highest safety and environmental standards. The new Type INNOVIA Metro 300 vehicles come with additional interior features including inter-car gangways to enhance passenger comfort and safety, as well as a modern seating arrangement that optimises capacity.

Bombardier has a dedicated team in Malaysia of more than 140 highly skilled employees supporting the delivery of various local projects, including final assembly of 266 cars completed until 2017 and this latest order for 108 cars to be delivered from 2020.
