On 18 August 2026, the City Airport Train announced that it reacts to the premature closure of the Wiener S-Bahn-Stammstrecke (Vienna S-Bahn main line) due to the cable fires in the area of Wien-Praterstern and will begin operating as „CAT by bus“ on 24 August, two weeks earlier than originally planned. The premium bus fleet will connect Wien Mitte station directly with Wien Flughafen up to five times per hour in each direction, with a journey time of 21 minutes.
The high-quality Setra coaches, each with 57 seats, will be provided by Blaguss Reisen. „CAT by bus“ will continue to offer a reliable airport transfer to and from Wien Mitte every 12 minutes between 7 h and 19 h and every 15 minutes.
At the same time, CAT is already looking to the future. The next generation of airport transfers was presented at a press conference in Wien. Starting in autumn 2027, CAT will return to service with new Stadler-built 200 km/h KISSes, setting new standards in comfort.
The Class 4705 EMUs will offer not only greater comfort but also increased capacity: with approximately 300 seats, the CAT significantly expands its passenger space compared to the existing fleet. Ample storage areas for strollers, two restrooms (including one with barrier-free access), and numerous comfort features such as power outlets with USB ports, fold-out tables, and reading lights at every seat complete the offering.
The strategic design firm moodley was responsible for the design of the new trains. From the outset, the interior design focused on a first-class feel, specifically through high-quality materials, a variable lighting system, premium seats that appear to float, lounge furniture, and the standing and reclining areas.
