The Škoda Group, together with the Polish company SAATZ and the city transport company MPK Wrocław, is launching a project to retrofit 31 Type Škoda 19T trams with the ACS anti-collision system from its own production. The Škoda 19T trams have been running in Wrocław, the metropolis of Lower Silesia, since 2006.
The Škoda Group anti-collision system combines LiDAR technology, cameras and advanced localization using HD maps and odometry. It creates a so-called “virtual tunnel” in front of the tram and detects static and moving obstacles in real time. LiDAR scans the surroundings up to a distance of 100 m, the IMU unit ensures precise alignment with the track profile and the ADAS camera provides a detailed 2D image. The driver is warned in good time and, if necessary, the system can automatically activate emergency braking.
The Škoda anti-collision system is already installed in trams in Tampere (Finland) and Olomouc (the Czech Republic). In the future, it will also be mounted in new trams for Praha, Bergamo and the German operator rnv. The system can also be installed on existing trams, which is the case with the Škoda 19T vehicles.
