On 6 October 2025, Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne, the public transport operator for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, announced that it has chosen Stadler to deliver 63 Tango Nordic trams, of which 30 are uni-directional trams intended for operation on the existing network and 33 are bi-directional for newly built suburban lines. There is an ongoing appeal period. Therefore, the final procurement contract cannot be concluded until a waiting period of 14 days has elapsed.
The contract worth 271 million EUR includes maintenance services for over 30 years. These services encompass in addition to technical support, also spare parts supply, the establishment of a local warehouse, and the development of an efficient logistics system. This landmark agreement marks Stadler’s first tram order in Finland, and also includes an option for up to 120 trams.
The tender lasted for over two years and was handled as a multi-round competition, with three companies initially interested in the supply of trams - Stadler, Škoda Transtech and CAF. However, only the first two submitted their final offer. The buyer stated in the competition closing report that only Stadler's offer met all its requirements.
The Tango Nordic trams are based on Stadler’s proven Tango platform and have been tailored to meet the specific needs of Helsinki’s urban environment. Designed with energy efficiency in mind, the trams feature lightweight construction and advanced systems for optimized driving. The first Tango Nordics are scheduled for delivery in 2028 for testing purposes, with batch production starting two years later.
The Tango Nordics will replace the iconic Valmet vehicles from the 1970s and 1980s and support the launch of newly constructed tram lines. They will play a key role in expanding and modernizing the region’s tram network. To ensure harmonious integration into Helsinki’s urban landscape, the tram design was developed in collaboration with Aivan, a leading Nordic design and innovation studio. The result is a vehicle that reflects the architectural character and visual identity of the city.
Stadler has delivered over 350 vehicles across the Nordic Region, including more than 100 trains and locomotives to Finland. The company supports its customers through long-term service agreements. In Finland, Stadler provides technical support and spare parts to customers such as VR Fleetcare. Warranty services are offered for Class Dr19 shunting locomotives and Class Sm7 FLIRTs. The company also supplies spare parts to the Finnish market and operates service locations in Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu, and Pieksämäki. Across the Nordic region, Stadler Service employs over 620 people, operates 12 service sites, and maintains 377 vehicles.
