ZSSK has completed the public procurement for new long-distance EMUs

On 20 March 2026, ZSSK has completed the evaluation of bids in the public procurement for new electric units for long-distance transport. The subject is the delivery of eight EMUs with an option for seven more, including long-term service. intended for long-distance transport on the main lines of Slovakia, especially on the Košice - Žilina - Bratislava route with a possible extension to Wien.
One bidder applied for the public procurement, the submitted bid by the Škoda Transportation and ŽOS Trnava consortium met all requirements. After the evaluation, further steps will follow, which will lead to the final setting of the project. This includes a professional assessment by the ÚHP (Value for Money Department) and negotiations on the final terms, including the price. The estimated value of the contract, including service provision and the option for spare parts, was set at EUR 644,949,000.
This step means that the project has created a basis for further assessment and decision-making on its further direction. The implementation of the project itself is conditional on securing financing. The future contract will contain a suspensive condition that ties its effectiveness to the availability of financial resources. ZSSK expects that the eventual implementation would rely mainly on European Union funds. Financing will be the subject of further negotiations and decisions.
