ČD wants to buy more ComfortJets

On 25 August 2025, ČD issued a tender for a “framework agreement for the supply of non-traction multiple units for long-distance transport”. The expected value of the contract is 8 billion CZK (around 327 million EUR), the subject of the agreement is “modification of the procedure for concluding partial purchase contracts for the production and supply of up to 90 cars with a speed of at least 230 km/h, enabling connection into a non-traction fixed rake with pressure-tight inter-car gangways, and for the supply of spare parts”.

Jiří Ješeta, member of the board of directors and deputy general director for passenger transport at ČD, said: "We have already received positive feedback from passengers and our partners in the current phase of operation of the ComfortJets. It is clear that the operation of modern trains based on non-traction units and modern locomotives has great potential for the further development of international transport and the connection of the Czech Republic with neighboring countries. That is why we decided to launch a tender for the supply of another 10 nine-car NMUs. We plan to order three trains with certainty, and seven ones are options. We will purchase them when another opportunity for their operation arises."

The NMUs, with a capacity of approximately 550 seats, of which approximately 100 in 1st class, must be approved for operation in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland and must meet the requirement for operation with Vectron locomotives and in the push-pull mode. The deadline for submitting bids is 21 October 2025. Since only one manufacturer can offer the required type of vehicle with the appropriate parameters, it is already clear that the ČD fleet will grow with additional ComfortJets.
