Hybrid battery-diesel shunters for KiwiRail

As part of the February 2024 agreement, KiwiRail ordered 24 Bo‘Bo‘ hybrid battery-diesel narrow-gauge shunters featuring a central cab and a maximum axle load of 16 tonnes, designed to operate within all shunting areas belonging to KiwiRail.

Regarding the current status of this contract, KiwRail told us that the "new Stadler shunters are progressing through the detailed design verification and validation process." Only then will the execiution of the contract follow; the first three machines should leave the Stadler Valencia works in January 2027 and are expected in New Zealand in April of the same year. Attached is a fresh picture showing the definitive design of the locomotives.
