Ingeteam has been awarded a contract by Stadler to supply traction converters for 10 Desert train DMUs that will operate on the Damman - Riyadh route in Saudi Arabia. This project marks asignificant milestone in Ingeteam’s expansion in growing markets.
The 200 km/h trains are designed for extreme conditions with temperatures exceeding +50 °C and exposure to desert dust. Ingeteam’s traction converters have been custom-engineered to ensure maximum reliability, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort under harsh environmental conditions and to provide redundancy for uninterrupted operation.
Each trainset will have two dieselelectric power cars, each of them equipped with two on-board traction converters, featuring a water-cooled system and a plug&play configuration to facilitate easy installation and maintenance. The converters are designed to facilitate efficient conversion of energy into the required voltage and frequency to feed the traction motors. They integrate proven power modules, including traction inverter, brake chopper, generator converter and medium frequency auxiliary converter.
Production has started in 2026 at Ingeteam‘s Ortuella (Vizcaya) facilities. A total of 48 traction converters will be delivered between 2026 and 2028, with an option for additional units. This project highlights Ingeteam’s ongoing commitment to developing cutting-edge power electronics for the rail sector.
