PORTREN SA, a company owned by the Uruguayan logistics group Christophersen and the Spanish company Cointer Concesiones, has awarded Stadler a contract to supply seven Type EURO4001 diesel-electric locomotives. It is Stadler’s first contract in Uruguay. The locomotives will be designed and manufactured at its Valencia works, deliveries are expected to start by the end of 2022.

This contract signing follows an announcement in mid-October 2020 that UPM had selected the consortium comprising Cointer Concesiones (a subsidiary of local logistics group, AZVI) and Christophersen, along with DB International, to operate and maintain freight trains carrying wood pulp and the chemicals and fuel required to produce cellulose, between the new pulp mill at Paso de los Toros and the port of Montevideo.

The new 1,435 mm gauge 2,800 kW Co’Co’ locomotives will be used on Ferrocarril Central, a 273 km line, hauling rakes of 26 wagons.
