On 14 December 2022, KTZ and Stadler signed three contracts of a total worth 2.3 billion EUR: one for the supply of 537 sleeper and couchette coaches, second for their 20-year full-service maintenance and third for the acquisition of a factory in Astana from KTZ with around 100 employees and for the transfer of Stadler’s technology.
The contract between Stadler Kazakhstan LLP and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy now covers the production of 557 coaches, including compartment and „platzkartny“ (open space with berths) models, as well as coaches designed for people with disabilities, and power coaches.
initially the contract covered the production and maintenance for 20 years of 537 passenger coaches. Later, during the engineering stage, the companies jointly found the optimal technical solution and increased the total number of generator coaches. The decision did not affect on the cost of the contract.
Now the coaches are of following types:
- sleeper coaches - 234,
- platskartny coaches - 233,
- PRM coaches - 35,
- generator coaches - 55.
The first batch of 51 locally produced coaches, manufactured using Swiss technology, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, all production processes are progressing according to internal schedules.
Stadler Kazakhstan currently employs over 450 people. Every new team member undergoes mandatory training on Stadler’s quality standards and technologies before joining the production line. Once approved for work, new employees are mentored by experienced colleagues to ensure a smooth transition and effective knowledge transfer. Stadler plans to expand its workforce to 600 employees by the end of 2025.
