ES64F4 locomotives approved for ETCS Baseline 3

posted on 26th Nov 2025 20:59

in early November 2025, Siemens Mobility has received type authorization from the ERA for the upgrade of its Type ES64F4 locomotives to the ETCS Baseline 3.4. Equipped with ETCS OBU of the Type Onvia Cab (initially Atlas), produced by Alstom, these Eurosprinter locomotives now meet a new European safety and interoperability standard, enabling more efficient and harmonized cross-border operations.

The project was awarded in December 2020, with prototype conversions completed at Siemens Mobility’s Allach locomotive plant after just 16 months. Following extensive testing and validation, the application for type authorization was submitted as planned to the ERA in December 2024 and has now been successfully granted.

The approval marks a major milestone in securing the long-term deployment of the ES64F4 fleet on key European freight corridors: more than 250 locomotives have been delivered to various operators since their introduction in the early 2000s.
