New long-distance EMUs for ZSSK

On 23 September 2026, a contract was signed at InnoTrans, according to which the consortium of Škoda Group and ŽOS Trnava will supply ZSSK with eight seven-car EMUs for long-distance transport. This is the result of a tender, the evaluation of which was completed by the ZSSK in March this year.
The contract will come into force after the financing of the project has been secured, the first units should be delivered in 2032 - 33 at the earliest. It is the first triple-voltage variant of the new generation of Škoda EMUs designed for international long-distance transport at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The 190 m long sets will have an output of 3,760 kW.
Each unit will offer a total of 566 seats. There will be 75 seats in first class, 18 of them in the quiet section. There will be 464 seats in the second class. Another 27 places will be offered by folding seats. The train will also include a large restaurant section connected to the first class with 32 seats intended primarily for food and drink consumption.
The trains will be approved for operation in Slovakia upon handover, and within 12 months of the delivery of the first unit, they should also receive approval for operation in Austria. The contract includes a ten-year service by the manufacturer, the supply of spare parts and diagnostic equipment, the provision of selected types of repairs, as well as the training of ZSSK employees and the necessary technical documentation. If the ZSSK uses the option, the consortium can deliver another seven units and ensure type approval enabling their operation in the Czech Republic and Hungary as well.
