On 24 September, Stadler unveiled the new FLIRT EMU for Valle d’Aosta. The Class ETR 814 unit marks the continuation of a successful partnership between Stadler and the Italian region, in the heart of the Alps. Laura Obert, Public Transport Director for the Valle d’Aosta-Valley said: “These red Stadler-trains are more than just vehicles - they are ambassadors of Valle d’Aosta. They will operate on the Turin - Aosta line, where full electrification will be completed in 2026.”

The collaboration between Valle d’Aosta and Stadler began in 2015 with the purchase of five Clas BTR 813 FLIRT EDMUs, the first of their kind approved for operation in Italy, and Stadler's first bimodal vehicles. These trains entered service in 2019 on the Aosta - Turin line and quickly became a recognizable symbol of the region.

Building on this foundation, Valle d’Aosta has ordered six additional FLIRT EMUs, financed in part by the EU Recovery Fund. These vehicles are designed to mirror the bimodal units for easy recognition, while offering greater capacity - 236 instead of 175 seats, and new passenger-friendly features. All trains display the “LOVE VDA” heart logo, symbolizing the natural beauty and tourist appeal of Valle d’Aosta.

The Class ETR 814 FLIRTs are four-car, 3 kV DC EMUs designed and built in just over two years. Adapted from the original bimodal trains, they feature lightweight aluminum bodyshells, with four wide low-floor entrance on each train side, ensuring fast passenger flow and easy, barrier-free boarding. The 160 km/h units have a Bo‘2‘2‘2‘Bo‘ axle arrangement, height 4,120 mm above TOR, width 2,820 mm, floor height in the low-floor area 600 mm and in the high-floor area 1,120 mm. There are 215 seats + 21 tip-up seats, standing capacity is 212 (4 pers./m²).
