First GYSEV’s new InterCity EMUs unveiled

On 30 July 2026, the newly built Class 445 FLIRT was officially presented at Siedlce to the management of GYSEV and to Hungary’s Minister of Transport and Investments, Dávid Vitézy. He said: „This project marks a major milestone in the development of Hungary’s long-distance rail network. These are the first InterCity trains in Hungary to be fully accessible to passengers with disabilities and equipped with an advanced end-to-end CCTV system, significantly enhancing passenger safety.
This investment not only modernizes GYSEV’s fleet, but also sets a new benchmark for the entire Hungarian InterCity network. It is particularly significant in light of Hungary’s plans to procure additional InterCity EMUs for the lines operated by MÁV. I am convinced that this is an important first step that will help improve the quality of passenger services on the Budapest - Győr - Szombathely and Budapest - Győr - Sopron routes.”
Production of the remaining FLIRTs continue to progress according to schedule. Róbert Homolya, Chairman of Stadler Trains Magyarorszá, highlighted: “Stadler has a 20-year history in Hungary, so in this anniversary year, it is of particular significance to us that a fleet of the renowned FLIRT trains, setting a new, higher standard, is arriving in our country for GYSEV.”
The modern trains features both first- and second-class accommodation, air-conditioned and low-floor passenger areas, and a state-of-the-art passenger information system. For greater comfort on longer journeys, the trains includes a dedicated bistro area equipped with food and beverage vending machines. The flexible interior layout will allow adaptation to seasonal demand, including space for up to 18 bicycles during the summer season. Passenger amenities will also include USB-C chargers, Wi-Fi connection, and holders for tablets and smartphones.
The next phase of the project will focus on comprehensive testing of the vehicles. It will begin in August 2026 in Romania (Făurei) and the Czech Republic (Velim). The first FLIRTs are expected to arrive in Hungary by the end of 2026, where domestic test runs will commence. Following the successful completion of testing and the acquisition of the regulatory approvals, the trainsets are expected to enter passenger service gradually from 2027. The full fleet of 11 FLIRTs is expected to be in service by the summer of 2028.
