Liebherr-Transportation Systems will supply heating-, ventilation- and air-conditioning systems that use propane (R290) as natural refrigerant for 16 FLIRT AKKU BEMUs. The latter will be operated by ÖBB on non-electrified or partially electrified lines along the Kamptalbahn in Lower Austriam, replacing existing diesel train fleet.
The three-car units with 160 seats are built by Stadler Bussnang and the initial delivery of Liebherr’s three saloon and two driver’s cab HVACs will take place during this summer. Roland Friedrich, Global Key Account Manager for Stadler, commented: "We are very thankful for the trust Stadler Bussnang has placed in us. With our propane-based HVAC system we offer vehicle manufacturers and operators an efficient solution for a more sustainable mobility. For us as an Austrian based company, we are looking forward to further support our customers and local operators applying and servicing propane-based HVAC systems."
The HVAC technology developed by Liebherr using propane as refrigerant is easy to service and guarantees rail vehicle operators a reliable product solution with low downtime. The concept takes all relevant safety requirements, such as the flammability for the refrigerant, into account. Propane (R290) is a natural alternative to conventional, environmentally harmful refrigerants. In terms of pressure, it is very similar to the refrigerant R134. Up to the climate condition and configuration with a GWP of up to three, it provides a low greenhouse potential as well as maximum cooling performance with minimal energy consumption.
