Emil Zátopek Prepares For Services To Germany

28 Dec 2015 17:19
  • Emil Zátopek Prepares For Services To Germany

On 15 December 2015 ČD’s 380.015 realised a series of test runs across the border between Germany and the Czech Republic on the line from Děčín to Bad Schandau. This photo was taken on that day at Děčín, showing 380.015 together with Captrain Deutschland’s Vectron 193 891.

The tests formed part of a standard procedure, to check that the control system was functioning correctly as the locomotive traversed the voltage break and the transition between the Czech and German ATP systems. The test runs also offered an opportunity for DB staff to get acquainted with the workings of a Class 380. Satisfactory performance during these tests was the final condition stipulated by DB Netz before the Class 380 locomotives are allowed to haul passenger service, at least as far as Dresden.

ČD’s Škoda-Built Class 380s On Regular Praha To Budapest Service

  • ČD’s Škoda-Built Class 380s On Regular Praha To Budapest Service

ČD’s Class 380s entered regular commercial service hauling expresses between Praha and Budapest on 22 October 2014, following driver training by MÁV START. The 380s are currently hauling the daily EC 272/273 “Avala” Beograd - Praha service, between Budapest and Praha. This is a warm-up exercise, since starting with the timetable change in December they will be used on between six and seven trains to Budapest each day. The Class 380s are now used on commercial services in three countries outside the Czech Republic - Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, and their use on Praha to Budapest services involves crossing two international borders for the first time. This photo, taken near Šaľa, shows the first southeastbound Class 380-hauled service (EC 273), the locomotive in question being 380.015.

ŠKODA recently presented its latest version of designs for the new trains ordered in 2013 by DB Regio for its Nürnberg - Ingolstadt - München services. In total six electric locomotives with six-car push-pull double deck rakes of stock are to be built. The design of the locomotives is to be based on the manufacturer’s Type 109E and will be designated Class 102 by DB. These new trains are scheduled to enter commercial service in December 2016.

On 29 January 2014 the UTK granted Škoda’s Type 109E electrics (ČD’s Class 380s) authorisation to operate in Poland. Requests for issuing the eligibility certificates for the locomotives are currently being processed.
In Hungary the standard requirement is for each individual locomotive to be subjected to approval testing before it is authorised. In 2013 380.011 and 017 were subjected to this, and since January 2014 so far, 380.003, 005, 006, 007, 010, 014, 019 and 020 were sent there in groups of two or three. They are realising test runs between Komárom and Győrszentiván. The first photo, taken on 3 February 2014, shows 380.020 and 019, with 431 098 belonging to MÁV TRAKCIÓ in the background. The second photo shows 380.019 making a test run the following day.

Austrian Authorisation For Class 380s

  • Austrian Authorisation For Class 380s

In the second half of October ČD’s Class 380s were finally granted conditional authorisation by ÖBB-Infrastruktur, enabling all 20 of them to operate in Austria. The approval is conditional, valid until 30 June 2014, and the 380s are limited to a top service speed of 160 km/h and to operate individually only, not in multiple. After 30 June 2014 it is hoped to obtain a five-year approval, this being the standard practice followed by Austrian legislation.
ČD supposes now to use the 380s for the regular haulage of two pairs of EC services daily linking Praha and Wiener Neustadt as of December 2013 timetable change. ÖBB drivers therefore started receiving training on the 380s - the first photo shows 380 002 on 3 October 2013 at Herzogenburg, west of Wien. The second view, taken on 22 October, is of the same machine passing the boundary stone (on the left of the track, with red and white chevrons) which marks the physical position of the Polish border between Poland and Germany, on the Berlin to Warszawa main line, between Frankfurt (Oder) and Rzepin, during test runs to monitor the transition between ATPs.

  • Class 380s On Test Commercial Service in Hungary and Slovakia

In Hungary, this was allowed on 8 August 2013, with only 380.011 approved for this purpose, hauling freights for Slovakian open access operator Prvá slovenská železničná (PSŽ). Subsequently, on 21 August six more 380s were allowed to operate in Slovakia - 380.001, 003, 004, 006, 011 and 015. Only a few restrictions were imposed because of EMC issues. As from 24 August ČD has used one of the batch on daytime trains Ex 121/122 between Praha, Horní Lideč and Žilina. Here we see 380.003 waiting to depart from Žilina with the westbound Ex 122 "Fatra" to Praha on 4 September 2013.

  • ŠKODA 109 E Electrics Become "Emil Zátopek"

Older readers may recall the Helsinki Olympics of 1952, when the Czech long distance runner Emil Zátopek won two gold medals for the 5,000 m and 10,000 m races. On 27 June 2013 Type 109 E electrics were collectively named after the runner, the christening ceremony being performed by Dana Zátopková, his widow. 380.007 was chosen for the naming ceremony.
The event at Praha hl. n. was also attended by ŠKODA TRANSPORTATION CEO Josef Bernard, the company’s director of research and development, Vladimír Malý, and EBC CEO Ulrich Wiescholek (far right on the second photo), who presented ŠKODA with the original certificate confirming that the Type 109 E locomotive complied with the TSI High Speed RST standard.

  • Conditional Approval For Class 380s Extended

The ŠKODA-built Class 380 electrics have still not received their full authorisation. They continue to operate in the Czech Republic only and under conditional authorisation. At the end of 2012 the conditional authorisations given to the locomotives expired, and so it became necessary to issue extensions, these valid until 30 June 2013. Here we see 380.005, 007, 008, 012 and 014, on the way to ŠKODA to be upgraded, on 9 January 2013 being hauled by ČD Cargo's 363.522 from Praha to Plzeň, crossing the Vltava river on the line between Praha-Krč and Praha-Radotín.
