Stadler is making localism a key tenet of the project to build, supply and maintain new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro.
On 25 November 2020, Stadler has committed to collaborating with Newcastle University on a variety of projects, underscoring its commitment to the north east region. This follows the announcement in January that Nexus had awarded the Swiss train-builder the contract to build, deliver and maintain 42 new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro.
On 4 October 2020, Stadler took on 120 staff from Nexus and assumed responsibility for looking after the Tyne and Wear Metro fleet.
On 16 September 2020, Nexus, the public body which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, has revealed colour scheme for its new 362 million GBP train fleet, as Nexus launches a major public consultation on its interior design.
On 15 June 2020 Stadler announced it has officially commissioned VolkerFitzpatrick to build a brand new depot at Gosforth, which will accommodate the new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro, set to enter passenger service from 2023.
On 11 February 2020 Stadler and Nexus signed the contract worth around 700 million GBP, comprising 42 METRO trains, their maintenance and building a new depot.
