This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

ČD Vectrons In Berlin And Hamburg

Starting on 8 May 2018, ČD’s Class 193s have been venturing much deeper into Germany than in the recent past, when since December 2017 they only reached as far as Dresden or Leipzig hauling EC expresses from Praha. Now, they have daily diagrams, one to Berlin, the other to Berlin and Hamburg. This photo was taken on 8 May showing 193 290 heading EC 175 "Robert Schumann" to Praha hl. n. upon departure from the low level in Berlin Hbf. Starting on 10 June 2018 it is envisaged that the Class 193s will be used on all EC diagrams between Praha, Berlin and Hamburg, as originally intended.

The second of the ex-SNCB Class 12s rebuilt by CZ LOKO, now 365.002, was put into service by CER Slovakia on 30 April 2018. This photo, taken that day, shows it at Petrovice u Karviné, on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland.

On 20 April 2018 Hitachi confirmed that the first of the 19 five-car type AT300 EDMUs ordered by Angel Trains for TransPennine Express services had departed from the Kasado factory in Japan, the voyage to England expected to take around two months. The first part of the voyage involved a short journey by barge on the sheltered Seto Naikai, the Seto Inland Sea, which lies between Honshū, Shikoku, and Kyūshū, to join an ocean-going vessel. TPE has now branded these new trains Nova 1. These photos show the first train being loaded onto the barge on 10 April.

In May 2015 luxury touring train operator Rocky Mountaineer ordered ten double deck panorama carriages from Stadler. These are now coming off the production line, and on 20 April 2018 the first carriage departed from Berlin-Westhafen on the first stage of their voyage to Canada. This photo shows RMRX 9541 at Westhafen being embarked from the low-loader which brought it from the Stadler Berlin-Reinickendorf works where it was built.

On the night of 22/ 23 April 2018 DP Ostrava’s first Tango NF2 tram, 1701, arrived at the operator’s Martinov works, having travelled from Siedlce on board a low-loader. The first two photos in this sequence were taken on the morning of the 23rd while it was being prepared for unloading. The third view shows 1701 together with ČD Cargo’s 731.049, which had arrived at the Martinov works with four wagons loaded with rails for track relaying on the Ostrava tramway network. During the night of 23/24 April nOVA is to be moved to Poruba tram depot, in readiness for tests, scheduled to start on the 24th.

On 13 April 2018 RegioJet’s first two yellow TRAXXes, 386.201 and 202, were moved from Germany via Děčín to Kolín, incorporated in a METRANS freight. They were then moved to the VUZ Velim test centre for a series of test runs on the circuits, the same day also making a test run between Kolín and Velim, as shown in the photo, taken at Velim station on 16 April.

On 13 April 2018 the first two TRAXXes destined for use by RegioJet were scheduled to depart from Kassel bound for the Czech Republic. Ten more TRAXXes are currently under construction for METRANs Rail. This photo shows the first of this batch, 386.031, at Kassel. It is poised to start commissioning and testing, and is scheduled to be moved to the Czech Republic by the end of May.

With orders for new wagons on the increase, Legios Loco recently decided to shift part of its wagon-building activities to a factory in Nymburk. This has in the past been used for locomotive repair and maintenance contracts, therefore the installations there had to be appropriately modified. To celebrate the completion of the first stage of this work, ceremony was held there on 5 April 2018, when these photos were taken.

The first wagon contract to be realised at Nymburk involves 50 90-foot platform wagons, destined for GTS Rail of Italy. The first photo was taken in the No. 3 hall, and shows the assorted sub-assemblies for these wagons. The other photo was taken in the No. 1 hall, and shows, in addition to one of these finished wagons, the various other activities still in progress at Nymburk. Visible is IDS CARGO’s 749.162 receiving low-level maintenance, and on the far left, partially visible, is the tender, 412.365, belonging to ČD’s steam locomotive 414.096.

Alstom’s Savigliano works has now completed repairing Class 680 Pendolino cars 682.003 and 082.003, which were heavily damaged during the level crossing accident in July 2015 in Studénka. The damage was such that repairs had to be realised at their birthplace. They started their journey back to the Czech Republic on 28 March, and this photo shows them that day between Savigliano and Torino.


First TRAXXes For EP Cargo

In December 2017 EP Cargo placed an order for two TRAXX F140 AC3 locomotives, with deliveries scheduled by the end of March. This photo taken on 23 March shows one of them, 187 085, in Bombardier’s Kassel works. The two TRAXXes are to take over haulage of trains moving REA-gypsum from the Lausitz Energie (LEAG) power stations to Stralsund for shipment to Sweden. This contract has been running now for over a year, but so far EP Cargo has had to use hired motive power.

The arrival of the TRAXXes will only mean a change in the locomotives used for these trains, nothing else. The haulage is contracted to HSL Logistik, EP Cargo making its locomotives available for the latter. EP Cargo is a subsidiary of Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH), which holds 50 % of LEAG’s shares, the other 50 % being held by PPF Investments.
