This part of our website has been prepared to extend our Railvolution news service. Its objective is to offer you snippets of the latest, most interesting news, accompanied by photos. On one hand this will let you to have a sneak preview of what the forthcoming number of Railvolution will contain. On the other, it will enable our editorial staff to provide you with information that is at their fingertips – and why waste exciting pieces of news while waiting until we have the printed version of the magazine ready for distribution? What is more, on the website pages we are in a position to publish photos for which there will be insufficient space in the printed magazine!

Please bear in mind that it is not our intention to 'digitalise' Railvolution! The printed magazine will still continue, with its full range of articles and news items. But we hope that you enjoy this new offering, and that it will stimulate your interest in our unique publication.

ÖBB is preparing for railjet services to Italy, with the first built rake of concerning stock making test runs on the Austrian network. The first of the Tauruses to haul them, 1216 018, has been modified for powering railjets and repainted in railjet livery and is now back in service. This photo shows it on 21 February 2016 at Wien Hbf., having come off the rake of stock which has just terminated from Venezia Santa Lucia on EC 30.

On 25 November 2015 Rail Cargo Carrier - Slovakia, the Slovakian licensed operator of the Rail Cargo Group, moved its first regular commercial freight under its own licence. This was a one-off occasion, the train being a service from Leoben Donawitz to Poland moving a load of empty Innofreight containers used for coke transport. This train is normally routed up the direct south to north transit line in the eastern Czech Republic, but on this occasion was re-routed from Wien via Bratislava, then via Kúty to enter the Czech Republic, and rejoin its usual route at Břeclav. Haulage was provided between Wien and Kúty by RCH’s 1116 049. Taurus 1216 227 acted as pilot from the Slovakian border station of Kúty to Břeclav, since the Class 1116 had not yet been authorised for use on the Czech section of this stretch of line.

On 15 June 2015, permission for test commercial operation, valid until 15 June 2016, was granted for ES64U2-061, 073 and 074 by Dopravný úrad. The machines are on hire from MRCE to LTE, and the permission only covers the haulage of LTE’s freights. The very first run into Slovakia with freight involved ES64U2-074 hauling a train of coke from Burghausen to Žiar nad Hronom on 4 July. This photo shows the train in southwest Slovakia, between Podhájska and Beša. The other diesels coupled behind Taurus are 744.001 (on hire from CZ LOKO) and LTE's own 740.541 and Eurorunner 2016 904. So far, permission has only been granted for the 52 Type ES64U2 Tauruses belonging to MRCE to use the stretch of line between Bratislava-Petržalka and the Slovakian border with Austria, this being awarded on 20 April 2015.

On 5 April 2014 the Rail Cargo Group (RCG) started using its own motive power in Romania and Bulgaria for its freight services which were established in recent years, linking Germany and Turkey. At present RCG runs five train pairs per week on this route, three of them linking Duisburg and the port of Tekirdag. On this service RCG is partnered by the Turkish freight company BALO, which is aiming to increase the amount of railfreight traffic between Turkey and Europe. ÖBB Produktion’s 1116 071 provided haulage between Sopron and Nova Zagora, just with diesel haulage required on the non-electrified Bucuresti - Ruse section, where the locomotive was provided from RCG’s Romanian fleet. The photos show the train on 8 April at Petrosani, in Romania, and the following day at the Bulgarian border station of Ruse.

Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik (STB) of Graz recently announced that it had signed a contract with Siemens to acquire 183 717, the last of the "white" Tauruses kept as reserve stock by the manufacturer. As a result the very last Taurus has been sold, following on from the handover of 183 714, 718 and 719 to AWT in November and December 2013. It has been agreed that 183 717 will stay with Siemens until the end March 2015, to be used for ETCS testing. STB will take it over on 1 April 2015. Until then, Siemens has offered STB one of its last Class 189s held in reserve stock, 189 822. Until the arrival of the latter STB had only one really modern, powerful locomotive. This is 1216 960 (former 183 712), shown in the first photo, taken on 30 June 2012, while the newcomer in April will carry the number 1216 961. 189 822 is shown in the second photo taken at Übelbach on 31 December 2013 and has been with STB since 20 December 2013.

On 22 November 2013 AWT took delivery of 183 714, the first of the three ES64U4s which it has on order. The first photo shows Edin Sose, AWT's chief commercial officer, holding the keys to the locomotive, at VUZ’s test centre in Velim. On his right is Roman Kokšal, Director of the Siemens Mobility and Logistics Division in the Czech Republic.
The following day the Eurosprinter hauled its first freight en route to Ostrava. This consisted of two locomotives hauled ‘dead’, together with a rake of seven empty wagons collected at Řečany nad Labem. On the 24th it hauled AWT's regular Paskov - Hamburg container train from Ostrava to Lovosice, as shown in the second photo, taken at Řečany nad Labem. AWT’s other two Eurosprinters are currently still at Velim - the third photo shows 183 718 there on 23 November 2013, while in the final one can be seen a meeting of 183 714 and 718 on the 22nd of the month.

At the end of August 2013 AWT ordered three of the last four ES64U4s which Siemens still had in store. Prior to being handed over, these locomotives had to be fitted with Mirel VZ ATP, thus transforming them into ES64U4-C versions. This modification means that they have to realise test runs at the VUZ test circuits at Velim and commissioning runs in the end. The first to be ready for this was 183 714, photographed at the test base on 21 October – the first photo shows it in the company of VUZ’s own 740.420 and ČD’s 380.011 (the latter locomotive had recently returned from a session of test runs in Hungary and Slovakia). The second photo shows 183 714 with SNCB Eurosprinters 1861 and 1877. The other two AWT Tauruses, 183.718 and 719, are to be ready for testing soon.

On 6 April 2013 ZSSK’s 361.101 arrived at the VUZ’s Velim test circuits. Here we see it there running in tandem with ZSSK electrics 362.011 and 350.005, which were used for braking purposes, and the VUZ dynamometer car. The second photo also shows Taurus 183 714.

As part of the preparations for the start of regular haulage of international expresses to and from the Czech capital, on 19 November 2012 PKP Intercity’s Husarz 5 370 009 arrived at Praha hl. n. at the head of night train 402 "Silesia" from Kraków Główny. The locomotive departed again, as shown in the accompanying photo, hauling EC 111 "Praha", this time destined for Warszawa Wschodnia.
